Our youth boxing program, supported by The National Lottery Community Fund, is teaching young people across Manchester much more than how to throw a punch – it's building character, discipline, and confidence.

The Power of Boxing for Youth Development
Boxing is often misunderstood. Beyond the competitive sport seen on television, it's a disciplined practice that teaches self-control, respect, and resilience. For many young people in our community facing challenges at home, school, or on the streets, boxing provides structure and an outlet for energy in a positive, supervised environment.
Thanks to generous funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, ChooseTheRightPath has been able to establish boxing clubs across multiple locations in Manchester, targeting areas where youth have limited access to structured activities and positive role models.
Our Approach: More Than Just Boxing
Our boxing program follows a comprehensive curriculum that balances physical training with character development:
- Technical Training: Proper stance, movement, punching technique, and defensive skills
- Physical Conditioning: Age-appropriate exercise routines that build strength, endurance, and agility
- Mental Fortitude: Developing focus, breathing techniques, and emotional control
- Life Skills: Sessions on goal-setting, conflict resolution, and healthy lifestyle choices
Each session is structured to be engaging and challenging while maintaining a safe, supportive atmosphere. Our coaches, many of whom came from similar backgrounds as our participants, serve as both trainers and mentors.
Partnership with The National Lottery Community Fund
The support of The National Lottery Community Fund has been transformative for our boxing initiative. Their funding has enabled us to:
- Purchase quality equipment including gloves, pads, headgear, and punching bags
- Secure appropriate training venues across different neighborhoods
- Provide professional training for our coaches
- Offer the program at no cost to participants, removing financial barriers
- Develop educational materials that complement the physical training
This partnership exemplifies how community funding can directly impact young lives, creating opportunities that would otherwise be inaccessible to many families in our area.
"Boxing has changed how I think about everything. Before, I'd get angry and lash out. Now I know how to control myself, to breathe and think before I react. My coach doesn't just teach me boxing – he talks to me about school, about my future. This club has become like a second home."
Impact on Young Lives
The outcomes of our boxing program have exceeded our expectations:
20+
youth participating across various locations
90%
report improved self-discipline and confidence
100%
engagement and wanted to attend further
Parents and teachers have reported significant changes in participants' behavior, noting improvements in self-control, respect for authority, and willingness to persevere through challenges. Several young people who struggled with aggression or were at risk of exclusion from school have found constructive ways to channel their energy through our program.
Breaking Down Barriers
Our boxing clubs have become spaces where social barriers break down. Young people from different backgrounds, schools, and even rival neighborhoods train side by side, learning to respect each other's differences and find common ground.
We've been particularly successful in engaging young people who have resisted other forms of intervention or support. The physical nature of boxing appeals to many who struggle in traditional educational settings, while the discipline it requires gradually builds transferable skills that benefit them in all areas of life.
Community Connections
Beyond the direct benefits to participants, our boxing program has strengthened community ties. Local boxing professionals volunteer their time for special workshops, creating inspiring role models for our young people. Parents who initially came just to watch their children have formed their own support network, and some have even begun volunteering with the program.
Community events, including exhibition matches and demonstrations, have helped change perceptions about boxing and about the young people in our programs. What many once saw as a violent sport is now recognized as a disciplined practice that builds character and community.
Looking to the Future
With the continued support of The National Lottery Community Fund, we're looking to expand our boxing program in several ways:
- Establishing dedicated female boxing sessions to encourage more girls to participate
- Creating pathways for talented participants to enter amateur competition if they choose
- Developing a junior coaching program where older participants can gain qualifications and experience
- Expanding our mental health support component to address anxiety and build emotional resilience
The boxing ring may be square, but the lessons learned within it create ripple effects that extend throughout our community. Thanks to The National Lottery Community Fund and the support of local partners, these young boxers are fighting for a better future – and winning.
